Reorganising my blog posts

I've been wondering what to do about this blog for some time. Even though, after our move up to Cumbria, I have a "Man Cave" that could accommodate Grogley Junction my thoughts and ideas have moved on. I was also wondering what to do with my Tredethy Wharf web site. This Web site had no blog element and was coming up for renewal. I 'd already started a separate blog for my engine shed project, Rospeath Lane and there could be a new exhibition layout project started in the very near future. There are also my Wargaming blog, Panzers and Muskets along with a very old Shanks Pony blog about walking the Coast to Coast. As I'm now living in Cumbria and hope to tackle a few fell walks I might use this last blog to record my efforts. 

So what to do? Should I combine all my hobbies into one blog? My thought was this could get very unwieldy and some readers might not want to read about all my projects. So I've made the decision to create separate blogs for each project and put links on each to each of the others. In doing so I've been able to create pages on the Tredethy Wharf to mimic my Web site.

So Grogley Junction blog will stay live as there might be some useful information. To create the new blogs I'm extracting relevant blog entries from this blog into each of the new ones. Then moving forward I'll only post entries in the each of the project blogs.

Until things settle down with adding historical blogs to each of the new blogs the title of the most recent on the links might not be the most recent entry by date stamp. Over me this should correct itself.

Many thanks for all support and comments that have been left on this blog. I do hope you find the time to link to the new blogs and follow the ones that have you have an interest in.

I must apologise to followers of this blog. My wife informed me that there was a problem as she was not now a follower. When investigating I found a quantity of comments awaiting moderation and approval. I’m still trying to understand why I’ve not received emails when comments have been left. An itch that might need scratching (3)

This one is still bubbling away, not quite mature enough yet but it's certainly up for consideration as a project to replace Tredethy Wharf.

Since my last blog (An Itch that might need scratching (2)),  I've been trying to make an acceptable track plan. Using the previously mentioned Railway Modeller article as a starting point I'm hoping the result below is not too far fetched from reality as a potential GWR Branch Line Terminus


Though I've made a couple of minor tweaks to the time table mention in the previous blog this design should fit the bill nicely.

Buildings will primarily be kits modified from the Ratio and Wills ranges. I'll also be making use of Petite Properties and Scalescenes products for some of the non-railway buildings. The plan above shows that I've allowed some buildings to lie over baseboard joints. My thinking is that these buildings will be removable and when in place will help to disguise the baseboard joints. I took the decision to moved the Dairy to the opposite side to that proposed in the magazine article to help hid the exit off the layout under the road bridge. To reduced space and to make track building a "tad" interesting there is one single slip plus one double slip in the arrangement.

I still need to thrash out ideas for the fiddle yard but I think overall the layout should work well. If built it will definitely give me plenty of operation interest, at home and at exhibitions, way beyond those I currently have with Tredethy Wharf.

Deciding on the next project


As previously mentioned, my Man Cave has been reduced in size, so Grogley Junction is now a non starter. For the past year I've been musing over what will replace it and I now have five possible ideas which are:
  1. GWR Branch Line Terminus - one that I've written about in a couple of 'An Itch that might need scratching' posts.
  2. Boscarne Junction - I've thought many times about this junction as a project and it was in the frame as the basis for my first P4 project.
  3. Bodmin General - one station that in my opinion is the ideal GWR Branch Line Terminus and one that I've pondered building for many years.
  4. Bodmin Road - a station that, many years ago, was used as the basis for the first layout the Mablethorpe and District Model Railway Club built. This then gave me my continued interest in the railways in Cornwall and especially around Bodmin.
  5. An Engine Shed - It's always been a dream to be able to construct a layout based on an Engine Shed.
Below are the five plans that I've drawn to evaluate each proposal.

1)
GWR Branch Line Terminus (Bigbury Bay)
Though I've posted a number of thoughts on this one, I've never been fully happy with the track plan. I have plenty of rolling stock (and this is certainly a possibility) but not sure if I'd be totally happy with the result or feel I'd achieved enough when completed.

2)
Boscarne Junction
Oh yes this is a definite possibility as it would be the ideal project to follow on from Tredethy Wharf. I have numerous photos of the junction including many of my own of the bridges from the river level. I'd have no excuse not to produce a convincing model. I've applied a certain amount of compression to the track plan, even so, there are a couple of anomalies that I'll have to live with. The first is I've had to curve the Bodmin North line to the right not left (away from the Bodim General Line as in the real junction) but still feel it will convey the correct feel of the junction. The second is that to have a convincing length of sidings I'd have to operate the layout with the Man Cave door open. Though the board between the Level Crossing and fiddle yard could be excluded for operation at home.

Bodmin General
Well this was an early front runner but with every man and his dog building a model of Bodmin General, along with my thoughts that I'd struggle with not meeting the standards that North London Groups achieved with their model, it has slipped down the list.

4)
Bodmin Road
Bodmin Road became a distinct possibility after I acquired a number of P4 locomotives from a modeller who was reducing his collection. After drawing numerous plans I think I have decided that is is not really practical due to not having enough space in the fiddle yards and also access to the Up fiddle yard. Just cannot make it work in the space available... Shame.

5)
GWR Engine Shed
Finally we have my proposed Engine Shed. This would fulfill a long-held ambition, one that I never thought I would be able to contemplate until a couple of years ago with the acquisition of a number of Western Region P4 Locomotives. My outline thoughts for this project are (i) to be based on a GWR Engine Shed; (ii) it has to be scenically based and not just a flat board with mainly track; (iii) It must have some other interest to justify its location and not just be a diorama to display a collection of locomotives. The above is loosely based on Leamington Engine Shed. I've incorporated four Carriage sidings that would be operated in conjunction with loco movements along with three coal wagon sidings. The idea is the landscape would slope up from the river to the back.  The carriage siding would be lower than the Engine shed and yard, then the Coal Wagon sidings being slightly higher still.

My current thoughts are it is a close thing between Boscarne Junction and the Engine Shed.

So which one is it to be?

Well... New Year...New start...

2019 was not a very productive year for my modelling projects, either model railways or wargaming. Back to my school report: "If Ian puts as much effort into his studies as he does on the rugby field he would achieve good results". For Rugby read Golf. Golf did take over much of my time last year which enabled me to win three competitions plus some good finishes in others. Think I should change the strapline on the blog header from  "an attempt to get out of the armchair" to "an attempt to to spend less time on the golf course". I feel that I can make better use of my time so plan to become more focused on modelling projects while at home.

So outline plans for 2020:
  1. Complete the Beattie Well Tank
  2. Create my own Grizer train
  3. Build better support structure for Tredethy Wharf
  4. Complete minor modifications to Tredethy Wharf
  5. Make a start on the next project (more about that later)
  6. Investigate DCC mainly for the next project but may also be for Tredethy Wharf
At the moment I've been honoured with invites for Tredethy Wharf to two shows during 2020:
  1. Scalefour North, Wakefield (28th & 29th March)
  2. Helston, Cornwall (25th & 26th April)
This does mean that for the next couple of months I must get my head down to some serious modelling before the better weather kicks in and I'll be tempted to spend more time out in the fresh air on the Golf Course!

An itch that might need scratching (2)

Due to the reduced size of the "Man Cave" my intention for the rest of 2019 is to continue to sell off "stuff" that I've accumulated over the years. This is a double edged sword in that it will make space for the next project and will also help to raise some cash for future expenditure.

Since my decision to bin Grogley Junction I've been thinking about what's next. During 2017 I found the Ratio building kits along with rolling stock that I've collected over the years for a possible GWR Branch Line Terminus. All I need is a suitable location.

Two articles mentioned in a previous post "an itch that might need scratching", have been at the back of my mind for several years. If I used the research from one and the trackplan from the other they would make a very good starting point for a fictitious BLT. At the end of this post I've quoted in full, from the January 1975 Railway Modeller to show the diligence that Mr Pocock went to with his research and ideas. The depth of the article captured my imagination but with no offence meant to Mr Pocock, his track plan did not. For illustration I've placed a scan below of his track plan to show his thoughts on how it would fit into a garage setting.


When the April 1979 Railway Modeller landed on the door mat, the Plan of the Month article struck a chord. This plan is based loosely on Swanage so has some prototypical resemblance. Back in 1979 I was not in a position to create a layout of this size, but I always thought it would be a good starting point as a track plan for a BLT.



I'll offer no excuse in admitting that the 3D illustration of the track plan is probably why it has had such a lasting impression on me.  It also ticks all the boxes for including all features for a West Country Rural Branch Line Terminus. As for Bigbury Bay, the road over the bridge could be the B3392 from Bigbury-on-Sea to the A379. Then with a few minor amendments to Great Westernise the plan I think it would suit the location well. Whether these minor amendments could include features from Iain Rice's "Witheridge" track plan (from his "An approach to Model Railway Layout Design") we'll have to wait and see.

Well that's it really, the track plan will have to be finalised before this project progresses any further. So, for now, the Ratio kits along with all the rolling stock will be kept. Don't think there is any harm in dreaming of future projects, just wish I had more time available... don't hold your breath, this project has a very good chance of not getting beyond the dreaming stage, especially as I would also like to build a GWR Engine Shed layout.

Anyway, less of this frivolity, nearly a year has past since Scaleforum with little progress on Tredethy Wharf and I really need to focus on getting the layout ready for the Caistor show in October

"Plan of the month
Bigbury Bay 
A beginner's line by N. J. Pocock

A BRANCH IS BUILT: The GWR built the Kingsbridge branch late in the 19th century. It is assumed that the GWR also decided to construct a line from a junction just to the east of Ivybridge viaduct to run south over the undulating terrain to terminate on the coast, passing by the villages of Modbury and Aveton Gifford, and thence via the Avon estuary to Bigbury Bay. Fig. 1 gives the route chosen for the branch line. Originally, the route was drawn out on a 1 inch Ordnance Survey map but this was found to give insufficient contour detail so a 2 1/2 inch map was used in the end.

Despite the difficult contours of the terrain, only four major engineering works are necessary, viz. Sheepham Viaduct (300 yards long by 120 feet high), Modbury Summit Tunnel (500 yards long), Aunemouth Bridge (350 yards long by 25 feet above mean sea level), and Aunemouth Tunnel (1,000 yards long). The last two items, strictly speaking, are only there to provide. a natural scenic break for the model of the terminus since it is quite feasible for the tracks to continue around the estuary, dispensing with the tunnel and crossing the estuary at its mouth in the bay. It is assumed that the GWR built the line economically (to the “yellow” colour axle-load restriction) and hence only the lighter tank engines would be allowed over the metals- effectively, the ubiquitous 45xx and 55xx 2-6-2T’s. The line is situated in the heart of the Devon farmland so there would be no heavy freight trains; but a modest freight service would entail general goods transported into the area and milk and farm produce transported out of the area. By the 1930s, when West Country holiday traffic was at its peak, facilities would exist (like the Kingsbridge branch), not only for a local passenger service, but also a daily through-coaches service to and from Paddington. These would be supplemented with extra coaches and workings on summer Saturdays. Ivybridge Station was rebuilt to function as a junction station for the branch.



PREPARATIONS FOR A TIMETABLE:


Fig. 5 gives the final compilation of a timetable for the branch, but there are a few preliminaries before arriving at the final product! First, there is the drawing out of a Gradient Profile (see Fig. 3) to get an idea of the gradients the trains have to negotiate over the branch. This was done by drawing the proposed route on a 2 1/2 inch Ordnance Survey map and calculating the rise (or fall) in feet of a stretch of line and dividing this into the length of the track, also in feet of course. The neighbouring Kingsbridge branch had the convenient use of the comparatively flat Avon valley for most of its route, but the Bigbury Bay branch has no such convenience until it reaches Aveton Gifford and the Avon estuary. Nevertheless, after several attempts at route planning, it was found best if the branch turned south after leaving the main line just east of Ivybridge Viaduct and descend steeply (1 :42) at the steepest part to Ludbrook Halt where after a short level stretch, the line rises again towards Modbury before entering a level section to reach the station. This was found to be the most difficult part of the line to route-plan because of the undulating nature of the terrain and deep valleys of the river Erme’s tributaries which the line has to cross, yet in the final route chosen only one large viaduct (at Sheepham) was found necessary. At Modbury station the line turns east up a valley of one of the river Erme’s tributaries and ascends to Modbury Summit Tunnel; and after the line has emerged out of the gloom it finds itself in another valley, this time of a stream that flows into the Avon estuary. The tracks descend down this and into Aveton Gifford station, thence to use the Avon estuary as far as Aunemouth Halt, and then cross the estuary and enter Bigbury Bay by use of a tunnel through the earth cliifs. This last section is level. From the Gradient Profile the running times “up” (towards London) and “down” (from London) can be calculated. The first two columns of Fig. 5 shows these; allowing for a maximum train speed of 35m.p.h. and stopping times of passenger trains at stations and halts en route. These are realistic running times for the average branch line speed for this kind of branch on the GWR was 21-22m.p.h. (as per the Kingsbridge branch among others) and the Bigbury Bay running times correspond to this very well.

Finally, Fig. 4 shows a table of all trains stopping at Ivybridge, Monday to Friday, 4th July to 25th September, 1938. This was compiled from the official GWR working timetable at the Transport Historical Records Office in London. The table is not entirely accurate for the simple reason the branch from Ivybridge to Bigbury Bay is fiction, not fact. Thus, one of the North West expresses (Manchester and Liverpool via Bristol, South Wales, Shrewsbury and Crewe) has had its‚ schedule altered to stop at Ivybridge in both ‚”up”  and ‚”down” directions; likewise, one of the Paddington- Penzance expresses to stop and attach the through coaches from Bigbury Bay on the ‚”up‚” working, and detach the through coaches on the ‚”down” train; the parcels train, Paddington to Penzance via Bristol, has also had a stop inserted into its timetable at Ivybridge since it stopped at Brent for the Kingsbridge branch; the ‚”up” Tavistock Jnc. - Ivybridge goods originally carried on to the sidings at Brent so that the loco could help out with workings on the Kingsbridge branch but this now terminates at Ivybridge, and the return evening trip starts from Ivybridge, so that the loco can serve the Bigbury Bay branch‚ - Kingsbridge being served by a goods trip to and from Newton Abbot instead! I will end this section with a brief comment on the GWR mainline workings in the West Country - there was nothing that was symmetrical about them in the “up” and ‚”down” directions, as Fig. 4 bears out, and the official working timetable shows.

 

THE WORKING TIMETABLE FOR THE BRANCH: 
Fig. 5 is a working timetable for the branch, Monday to Friday, compiled from the running times and Fig. 4, taking care of course not to put a branch train on a collision time with a mainline train over Ivybridge viaduct! The table is more or less self-explanatory, but a few words need to be said here. Two locos only are required to work the branch, two “B” sets and a three coach rake of corridors, a couple of milk tanks, either a syphon “J” or 40ft. Dean luggage Van for the parcels, and an assortment of 30 or so wagons. All these are available in kits. A spare all-3rd coach‚ - how about a 58ft. Clerestory made up from two Triang brake/3rd Clerestories ?‚- can be kept in the coach siding for Saturday local passenger trains, to supplement the “B” set. Any parcels from Bigbury Bay branch would be taken in the van as far as Ivybridge and then put on a local passenger to connect with the appropriate parcels train at either Plymouth or Newton Abbot. The perishable traffic from the branch for the Crewe and Paddington freight expresses is attached to the rear of a local passenger train to Totnes and Plympton (for Tavistock Inc. sidings) respectively. The milk tanks are taken on to a dairy between Ivybridge and Cornwood by the 45XX that worked them up from Bigbury Bay, and at the dairy sidings marshalled into the appropriate train-set for their destination. A Saturday timetable has not been worked out since this would mean more coaches for through services, a longer traverser in consequence, and into the bargain the afternoon goods would not run, thereby detracting from variety in operation."

New "Man Cave"

In a previous post I alluded to a building project that will have an affect on my modelling hobbies. This was the building of an extension between the house and garage (Man Cave) creating a small study and a passageway through to the garage. This project also included stealing a good seven foot off the length of my "Man Cave" for a downstairs shower room and toilet. Even though I've lost space I now have direct access to the "Cave" from the house.
  • No more venturing outside in the dark and cold winter evenings.
  • No more worrying about security while opening the door that gave access from the street. This door is now firmly bolted.
  • No more having to boost the temperature with an electric fan heater during the cooler evenings as it now has a radiator running off the house central heating.
All in all, losing seven foot off the length of the room along with having access direct from the house has enabled me to create a more cosy welcoming space in which to while away the evenings. The only down side is that, due to the reduced space, it would seem my proposed Grogley Junction project is now "dead in the water".


I'm still getting use to the new room and sorting through all the stuff I've collected over the years but it's coming together nicely.

The Old and the New

Normally I think the saying goes "out with the old and in with the new", but I thought I'd try my hand at combining the old with the new.

Again I've been thinking about what skills I lack and also what I've purchased to have a go at and not had the courage to start. I think it was at a Letterhead Scaleforum that, with all the bravado of a newbie to the hobby, I purchased a Craig Welsh etch for a 9ft RCH chassis. After a very poor attempt at constructing a Bill Bedford etch for a 16T mineral wagon Mr Welsh's etch was allowed to languish in a box along with a couple of wooden mineral wagon kits. In subsequent years I've been enticed to purchased some Rumney Models etches so I thought it was about time I had a go at constructing a chassis etch od some description.

When digging out the box containing Craig Welsh's etch I found this very old Ian Kirk kit.


God knows how long I've had this kit. Unlike Ian Kirk's later offerings for this type of wagon there is no internal planking detail on this vintage kit. Even so I thought if I make a good attempt at marrying this to Craig's etch it could be permanently loaded with coal to disguise the lake of internal detail.

So...

The body goes together reasonably well, though I think I may have to cut a new bottom for the wagon. I've already assigned the brake gear to the bin and the next task will be to remove the W irons and V hanger from the solebars.

As I'd spent a few moments (well more than a few) mulling over this little project, reading the build instructions for Craig's and also Rumney Models etches, that was as far as I got during last evenings visit to the "Man Cave".

A white metal interlude

The other day I received an email from Missenden Abbey reminding me of the up and coming Spring Weekend that I've enrolled on. Of all the courses available, I'd chosen to attend the session on 4mm Locomotive Kit Construction. It was a tough decision as there were 4 other courses from which I could learn much: Weathering; Backscenes and scenery;Trackwork; also DCC Sound. In the end I realised that my skills in locomotive construction are currently my main weakness. Though I have had an 03 chassis built for me and have another area group member building a Beattie Well Tank chassis, I cannot rely on the good will of these guys for too long.

The decision I have to make is what to take to Missenden. My current options being:
  • A DJH 1366 kit - with the aim to get a working chassis by Sunday afternoon.
  • Another Beattie Well Tank - with the aim to get a working chassis by Sunday afternoon.
  • A 57xx Chassis as well as taking first attempt at a  57xx chassis for correction.
  • The white metal body kit of the Beattie Well Tank that the chassis is being built for.
In thinking about the last option it made me realise that I've not yet constructed a white metal kit. Would I really need to use my time at Missenden just to build a white metal locomotive body? Hmmm... That might not be getting the most out of the weekend.

So, to test my white metal soldering skills, I blew the dust off a couple of Four Most Models wagon kits. The first to get the heat treatment was a SR 12T 8 plank wagon.


 

Well, overall it's not turned out too bad. I don't think there is anything that a little filler cannot rectify. I'm not brave enough yet to apply more solder to fill some of the joints for fear I'll de-solder a joint. As a bonus the wheels are all in the same plain and it runs true with, so far, no derailments on Tredethy Wharf. I've not installed coupling hooks yet as I'm not sure if the white metal ones provided with the kit would be up to the task.

On to the next wagon, a  LSWR 10T round ended open.



I thought I'd compensate this wagon. Possibly no need to but had itching figures to use the MJT 2291 compensation units again.


After this brief trial of constructing these white metal kits my trepidation of tackling a white metal loco kits has lessened greatly. So this little interlude from the Brake Van Special has proven to me that my time at Missenden should be used mainly on one of the three chassis building projects not wholly on a white metal kit.

Polbrock Engine Shed Building

During lunch breaks (whenever I've manage to grab one) I've been attempting to draw the main engine shed building for Polbrock. This is following on from the idea proposed at Octobers Area Group meeting that I could create a master of one wall section and cast subsequent sections. Also be able to use one of the members Silhouette cutters to cut out other bespoke sections out of platic card.

Below is the current drawing.


I'm planning on using the water tank from the Dapol kit which has fixed the dimension for the building underneath. Before committing to cutting plasticard I'll print the drawing and mount on card to test size and fit to a full size Templot track plan.

For one who's not scratch built buildings before, big project, me thinks... Smaller building to cut teeth on, Panawan would be wise.

Silence is golden

Well not golden, rather inspiring and exiting.

I've been invited to help backstage with Kyle of Sutherland at Railex next year. As a prelude I spent a very enjoyable day in Skipton being introduced to the layout and its creator.





Also, much to my surprise, I've been invited to show Tredethy Wharf at Scaleforum 2018...

This invite has spurred me into action with; rectifying some of the faults en-counted at the Lincoln show earlier this year; thinking further about auto-couplings; also about progressing some scenic improvements. I also have realised I need to give thought to completing some locos and extra rolling stock for this prestigious show. Not sure I'll be able to covert the layout to DCC as I would have hoped for a Scaleforum. Also to keep it authentic to the line I'm trying to depict it might have be a diesel only layout but I'm already looking forward to the weekend in September.

Well, is this finally Polbrock Engine Shed?

Again, after much thought, I proposed a further trackplan for consideration to Mr Severs and he very promptly came back with some sound advice. So unless someone can offer any further constructive advice I think the below plan for "stage one", Polbrock engine shed, will be rubber stamped "Approved".

 As can be seen I agree with previous advice given that the double track between Polbrock and Grogley would not be typical of this stretch of line. I feel Mr Servers thoughts on the signalling, along with the addition of the "Sand Drag" to protect the Padstow Wadebridge line, could well satisfy the BoT. One comment he did make was he thought the LSWR would have built the engine shed at Grogley Junction. I do agree and there may well have been space. The problem I had when revisiting the Grogley's track plan was that I could not find a way to fit the engine shed at Grogley where it would have been located and have enough room in the "Man Cave" for a work bench. If only the "Cave"  could be 2-3 foot wider...

I've drawn the track plan in Templot and to me it feels good. It will offer operational interest for one person to build and operate. It will also be a good stepping stone to continue on to Grogley Junction for the building of rolling stock.

The two three-way turnouts need to be completed in the above Templot track plan. Even so I printed out a full size plan as a discussion point during last week's Scalefour meeting and it seemed to gain approval. Very rough full size mock ups have also been created of the engine shed and water tower to test location and size against the track plan. I'm now investigating how to build them. The initial plan was to build them using Wills Plasticard. During the last Area Group meeting a comment was made about making a master of a section of the engine shed wall, then to take several resin castings off the master to build the shed to save some time and effort. Seems a good plan to me especially as I've never scratch built any building before.

I'm now looking forward to posting about progress on this project and further tweaks on Tredethy Wharf.

An itch that might need scratching

A while back, in a previous post, I'd mentioned a long held desire to build a GWR Branch Line Terminus and that I might put my thoughts together in a blog posting. Not sure if this is the right time but consider this post as therapy to either cement my ideas or dispel them for good.

In the past there have been a number of layouts and magazine articles that have "floated my boat" but the ones that have stuck with me over the years are:
  • P4 model of Bodmin General by the North London Group.
  • Articles in the Model Railway Constructor about the construction of Bodmin General.
  • An article in the January 1975 Railway Modeller by N.J. Pocock titled Bigbury Bay.
  • An article in the April 1979 Railway Modeller Plan of the month - A Southern branch line.

There have been other layouts, in books and magazine articles, that I've pored over but the above have been the ones I've always returned to and contemplated for a BLT project of some sorts.

Let me expand on the above:

My interest in the Bodmin area was sparked by the Mablethorpe & District Model Railway Club choosing to build a layout using Bodmin Road's track plan. Then after seeing the North London Groups' P4 model of Bodmin General and reading the articles in the Model Railway Constructor, brought home to me what could be achieved, not only in modelling standards but operation. This was in the 1970s when I was just starting to discard the toy train cloak and learning how to build finescale track to 00 and EM standards. Up to that point I'd only constructed one layout called "Edgcroft" using Peco Streamline track and "Prototype" card buildings.

I think the Railway Modeller issue from January 1975 struck a cord due to the diligence that Mr Pocock put into the research for the article. The article describes a fictitious branch line from Ivybridge to Bigbury on Sea. Mr Pocock goes to great lenghts to describe the location, then describes his fictitious reasons why and how the branch was built including a map of the branch and gradient profile, there is also a proposed track plan of the terminus (dare I say very 1970s). He then goes on to describe traffic backed up with a timetable and mainline connections at Ivybridge, finishing off with his thoughts on the required rolling stock. All that needs doing is building the layout. Unfortunately I always thought the track plan left something to be desired.

The April 1979 Plan of the month is a fictional plan based on Swanage and has all the necessary BLT features; single platform with runaround loop; goods yard with goods shed, cattle dock, coal yard and head shunt; engine shed with water tower, water column and coaling stage; there is also provision for industrial/private siding in the shape of a diary. All to fit in an L shape space of 8ft x 4ft in 00. Along with track plan and signal diagram the article has a 3D full colour illustration. I have to admit that this is probably why I initially warmed to the plan along with it seemed to have all necessary features.

There are many Ian Rice track plans that I've mused over and redrawn but Witheridge is one has always struck a cord when thinking about a GWR BLT. I especially like the way buildings have been used to mask the entrance to the fiddle yard along with the level crossing. The kick back to the goods shed also adds operational interest. It has the all features I feel a BLT should have bar one, the exclusion of an engine shed is the only down side.

So, what I am I considering?

Is there a possibility that I can build a GWR BLT using Mr Pocock's background information on Bigbury Bay with the April 1979 Plan of the month and a smattering of features from Witheridge all to similar standards of Bodmin General?

For a layout based in the 1930s, I already have two P4 locos that would fit the bill as they will need no further alteration apart from possibly renumbering.

Thirdly; I already have a OO GWR liveried "B" Set as well as a P4 Auto Coach in GW livery along with 30 or so wagon kits that I've collected over the years just for this long held desire.

I may expand on the above thoughts in a future blog, but, if I intend to have a layout to exhibit, once Tredethy Wharf has out lived its usefulness, this one itch I may have to scratch, though may I suggest you don't hold your breath...

Web site update

eBay sales have been going well, which has enabled me to fill in gaps of coaching stock requirements for my ambitious Grogley Junction. Oh, golf clubs have also been purchased.

On the modelling front I've made a start on converting a couple of Class 08 shunters for Tredethy Wharf. These two will eventually be St Blazey engines but a little more research is involved as I'm realising that the differences between 08s is a potential minefield. Also on my workbench are four 7 plank wagons.


Three of the above are Bachmann models which are receiving either a complete repaint and/or weathering. A fourth is a very old wagon of uncertain parentage which I've had for some time in a part-built state. My plan for the next few months is to try and clear as many part completed wagon projects as possible before starting on new builds or conversions. These part-built projects include a Cambrian LMS steel box van; a repainted Bachmann steel open wagon with wooden doors and a SR Plywood 12T van which I've also repainted; aalong with a couple of part-built Cambrian Models 16T mineral wagons. I'll then make a start on a few Brake Vans and people for the Brake Van Special. Once these are completed I hope to have cleared more "stuff" via eBay and created a reasonable hobby fund for making a start on Grogley Junction.

Back to the big project - Signal diagrams

Can I suggest you settle down somewhere quiet with a glass of your preferred beverage before embarking on reading this blog entry... it's a bit of an epic... :-))

While I have read a couple of books (British Railways Signalling, G.M. Kichenside & A. Williams and Pictorial Record of Southen Signals, G.A Pryor) and think I'd given a fair fist at creating signal diagrams for the project. I was still unsure if I'd understood signalling practices correctly. While members of my local Scalefour Group are very willing to offer advice and documentation, they're knowledge is heavily LNER influenced. So a few months ago I sent my thoughts to a long time friend who might help. Fortunately he new Paul Severs who is very knowledgeable of SR practise and wow... what a response. I feel indebted to him for taking the time to read and understand my thoughts then produce the following diagrams. Paul also supplied comprehensive explanatory notes, which, with his permission, I copy out in full below.

Grogley Junction and Polbrock Shed

a] Distant signals on single lines were invariably 'fixed', i.e. not operated from the signal box, and never in the 'off' position; the very short distance between station and shed boxes would not require any distants [though for interest I have included a repeater for the down station home on the post of the Polbrock down starter, and a fixed distant arm on the post of the up main advanced starter on the Grogley Station diagram]; therefore this also simplifies signalling: those numbered 24, 25 in shed box would exist as fixed distant, and so would not have levers allocated in the frame - those numbered 1, 2 in same box, and those shown on same posts as 21, 22, 23 would not exist at all. Very sad for modellers who would like to have as many different coloured levers in their signal boxes as possible - if you want yellow levers you must have long stretches of double track!

b] Junction [DOWN] end of station too complex - I realise it is inspire by the multitrack junction at the north end of Barnstaple station, but that was highly unusual - at first I thought that the line behind platform 2 was platform 3 - I see it is labelled as a goods loop, presumably to be used for the exchange sidings. Therefore this would be connected to the up line [Platform 2] at the point of the junction by way of a double slip - greatly loved by the LSWR! See revised plan suggestion, Grog Jcn Revision 1.jpg. This also simplifies the signalling. Small suggestion - junction signal box would be better on down side, as per SBD.






c] Exeter/Wadebridge [UP] end of station would be better without the facing crossover [necessitating two FPLs] and replaced by connection from down main to loop, with trailing connection from loop to up main, forming a single slip, and up to down connection via a trailing crossover [Grog Jcn Revision 2.jpg]





d] Ref. revised SBD [station/junction] [Grog Jcn Sig Diag.jpg] - There are 34 active levers required, so the box in reality would have had a 36 lever frame with two spare, though if society levers come in fives, you could have 35 with one real spare and another imaginary spare! Here's the lever numbering with labels as they would appear in the levers::

* SR was very economical with signals, especially on single lines, so where possible, shunting moves made use of running signals; shunting signals were only used for movements for which there was no available running signal. Furthermore, where LSWR [like many pre-group companies, and as GWR continued to] used a shunt signal for each route, the SR used just one for all routes from a given stop point; after all, they argued, both driver and signalman knew which route was intended, and the latter could only set one route at a time. So under LSWR there would have been a Stevens drop-flap ground signal at 18 for down to up main shunts, and another [21] at the entrance to the down siding. Some companies used ground signals as 'detectors' operated by the point to indicate which route was set; neither LSWR nor SR used such a practice. Early LSWR signal practice economised on levers by having two shunt signals [covering the opposite directions through the same crossover points] operated by one lever, which in the 'on' position was vertical in the frame - to make one signal 'off' you pushed [to the 'normal' 'on' position], and for the other you pulled [to the 'normal' 'off' position in the frame] ! SR removed all such 'abnormalities' as soon as possible!

# Entry to the goods loop: from both the Bodmin and Mawgan Porth branches, entry does not entail crossing a running line, so LSWR/SR both economised by placing the goods arm on the same post as the home signal, below it, hence Nos. 4 & 13 signals; entry from the down direction requires crossing the up line, so that would be made clear by placing the goods arm in a lower position on a bracketed doll, hence the No. 30 signal.

(Where any signal [running or shunt] permitted movement through a facing point that was locked because of passenger running movements, the signal wire ran through a detector box on the line side which was operated by the FPL - if the lock had not engaged, the signal wire could not be pulled.)





e] Polbrock shed: owing to the very short distances [real or model] between the station and the shed the need for signals is greatly reduced. I offer a much simplified SBD [Polbrock Jcn Sig Diag.jpg] requiring only 15 levers - no ground signals needed for movements in and out, nor within the shed area. All movements governed by the running signals, or in the rare event of a light engine off the Exeter line needing direct access to the shed, by hand signals.The minor suggestion I would make is to move the scissors crossover points nearer to the points into the shed, and the signal box nearer to the junction as in the revised part plan [Polbrock Revision.jpg]. The alternative is of course two successive simple crossovers, as at e.g. Tipton St. Johns, but a scissors crossover is interesting, and a challenge to one's point-building schemes, so I can see why Ian has put it in! Anyway, the Polbrock lever frame would look like this:

* Being a 'trailing' crossover, no FPL is required
** This would be an interesting signal - a miniature arm, with or without ring, but painted YELLOW: in the 'on' position, like a distant, it could be passed when going from
headshunt to the shed complex, and no signal is required for the opposite direction; when pulled off, it signified that the points were set to cross to the up main, and thence
to No 3 signal for movement to the station, or in reverse to the No 12/14 signal for authority to proceed onto the Wadebridge or Exeter lines
# Although the Exteter route was the major route, in signalling, the taller arm refers to the route straight ahead, the lower arm to the route requiring crossing the points.

Now to the questions Ian asks:

1. Positioning of distant signals. I have already answered this in my notes above [Note [1]]

2. Operation of shunting [ground disc] signals. LSWR/SR virtually never used these as route indicators, so were always worked by a separate lever. As noted above, economy demanded that they were only placed and used when a necessary movement could not be authorised by running signals; pulling off a running signal authorises the movement you are supposed to do, not necessarily to proceed to the next block post!!

3. Facing Point Locks [FPLs]. These are only required on points which face the direction of travel of a passenger train. The necessary locks are indicated on the revised signal box diagrams.

4. Grogley junction complex [!]. The similar complex at the north end of Barnstaple station was of course necessary because of limited space, the sharp curve to the river crossing, and the number of passenger routes; since the third route here is into a goods loop, it would be accessed by a double slip point at the throat of the junction, obviating the necessity of the third crossing road - see Grog Jcn Revision 1.jpg for my suggestion.

5 & 6. Distant signals . Again see note [1] - they would all be 'fixed' distants, not operated by the signal box, and never 'pulled off'. There are no 'outer' and 'inner' distants, only inner and outer home signals [and outer homes were only required on faster, double track lines]. Sometimes because of the shortness of block sections on main lines, the distant for the next section is on the same post as the starter or advanced starter signal of the previous section, and where through running of expresses needed to be signalled, distant arms were used as 'repeaters' for the next stop signal, again mounted below the previous stop signal. However, even on a busy branch such as this [!] speed restrictions would mean that no operational distant was needed - strictly speaking, neither the banner repeater for Grogley's down home, nor the fixed distant on Grogley's up advanced starter would have been needed or used, but I include them for a bit of variety, on the authority of 'modeller's licence'!

I offer this as advice - none of it needs to be accepted, but it does reflect what the LSWR/SR would have done if this station/shed complex had been a reality.

I've sat on this information for some considerable time, trying to take it all in. Now the Lincoln exhibition is out of the way, the "Man Cave' back in some sort of order after our holidays away along with eBay sales creating a small hobby fund, my thoughts are back to the big project.

I'm fully in tune with the Paul's suggestions for the simplification of the junction and the alteration at the up end of the station, as I am with the minor alterations at Polbrock. The only suggestion I'm having a problem with is moving Grogley Signal Box into the remains of the quarry. I'd position the signal box on the platform to give a good view around the curve. Moving the box to the inside of the curve would severally restrict the view due to the contours of the surrounding land. Would the lie of the land have influenced the positioning of the box or its location close to a complex junction? As the building of the Grogley Junction section of this project is way in the future that decision can wait.

The only other problem I have is that I agree with Ullypug's comments on two previous RMWeb posts (1) & (2) about the scissors crossing at Polbrock and the double track being a little out of character for the North Cornwall line. However, I would still, somehow, like to replicate the two adjacent single lines that ran out of Wadebridge... I also need to find an example for the junction at Ruthernbridge or re-think that section of the line due to Compound2632 comments. Any suggestions anyone?

Well.. next project has to be a P4 loco chassis Pannier or Class 08 along with the Lincoln "show outcomes" on Tredethy Wharf, so I've still some time to mull over this quandary...
